traîneau à chiens au Yukon - Dogsledding in Yukon

Il y a déjà 2 semaines que Marcelle a pris son départ à Willow, participant à cette 42ième édition de la plus grande course de traîneaux à chiens au monde, la célèbre Iditarod. Les détails, Marcelle nous les racontera à son retour, car toute précision de ma part ne serait que spéculation, Marcelle étant la seule à savoir comment le tout s'est réellement passé depuis.

Ce que l'on sait, par contre, puisqu'on a pu le voir sur vidéo, grâce à l'Iditarod Insider, c'est qu'elle a eu un petit accident de parcours à Dalzel Gorge, comme bien d'autres d'ailleurs, entre la Rainy Pas et Rohn. Heureusement, on avait déposé un trâineau de secours chez Northern Air Cargo, pour dépôt à McGrath, 2 chekpoints après Rohn, où elle s'est bien rendue malgré un traîneau abîmé et le manque de neige sur cette partie de la piste, sans compter un chien en moins. Et oui, cette chère Cali a encore bouffé ses booties, ce qui l'a rendue mal et Marcelle a dû la renvoyer depuis Rohn, jusqu'à Anchorage, où l'attendait son handler, Bruno Prados. C'est d'ailleurs grâce à lui qu'on a cette information... ;)

Une fois l'échange de traîneau effectué à McGrath, Marcelle a poursuivi son chemin jusqu'au prochain checkpoint, Takotna, où elle a renvoyé 2 autres chiens, Pluton et Doulik, souffrant tous deux à l'épaule gauche, du moins selon le rapport du vétérinaire en poste. Deux checkpoints plus loin, à Ophir, c'est la belle Lola, dont le tricep gauche la fait souffrir, qui doit rentrer aux soins de Bruno. Au checkpoint suivant, à Cripple, c'est au tour de la pauvre Cochise d'être mise au repos, tout simplement épuisée. Voilà donc l'information que j'ai réussie à obtenir de Bruno. Marcelle me pardonnera si on a tout mélangé, car même si on parle tous deux le même langage, Bruno et moi, il arrive qu'entre Québécois et Français, on ne veule pas dire la même chose. ;)

Selon le site web de l'Iditarod, Marcelle aurait aussi retiré un autre chien à Elim, qui lui (ou elle) est parti(e) l'attendre à Nome, mais on n'a pas réussi à savoir lequel ou laquelle. Mais bon, il y a des chances que ça soit un mâle, puisque la seule femelle qui restait était notre très chère Cheyenne Jr. À moins qu'elle n'en ait eu assez de tous ces machos... ;)

Voilà donc ce qu'on sait pour sûr. Pour le reste, il faudra attendre le retour de Marcelle pour qu'elle nous raconte tout ça en détails... 

En ce 15 mars, il est maintenant 13h en Alaska, 14h au Yukon, 17h au Québec et 22h en Europe, du mois si mes calculs sont bons... ;)  Sur site web de l'Iditarod, la balise de Marcelle indique qu'elle s'est arrêtée, non loin de Safety, le dernier checkpoint avant Nome. À moins que sa balise ne fonctionne plus ?  Osons espérer que tou va bien et qu'elle a tout simplement jugé bon de s'arrêter avant pour se reposer, profitant de ce dernier moment de répit au grand air de l'Alaska, seule avec ses chiens... Après tout, elle est en route depuis plus de 12 heures, donc ce serait là un repos bien mérité. Patience, le dénouement s'en vient...

 Selon Mitch, mon contact au Visitor's Centre de Nome, Elliot Anderson, le musheur qui restait derrière le trio féminin dont faisait partie Marcelle avec d'autres recrues Monica Zappa et Lisbet Norris avant de s'arrêter, aurait scratché. Bref, à moins qu'elle ne rattrape Monica et Lisbet, Marcelle pourrait très bien fermer la piste et se mériter ainsi le Red Lantern Award, remis au dernier musheur à rentrer à Nome en symbole de sa persévérance. Toujours selon Mitch, ainsi qu'Eric Noreau, qui s'occupe du reste de la meute d'Alayuk avec le mari de Marcelle, Gilles, Marcelle devrait rentrer vers 14-15h de l'après-midi à Nome (heure de l'Alaska), peut-être même plus tard puisque 6 pouces de nouvelle neige semblent vouloir ralentir les choses. 

La suite avec Marcelle... En attendant, je vous laisse avec ce beau dessin que ma fille Niivi, qui était au départ avec moi lorsque Marcelle s'est lancée dans cette aventure épique, a tenu à faire pour celle qu'elle admire énormément et, qui sait, l'inspira peut-être à faire elle aussi l'Iditarod quand elle sera grande... S'il reste de la neige en Alaska d'ici là ! ;)

It’s already been 2 weeks since Marcelle took off from Willow, participating in the toughest dog sled race on earth, the famous Iditarod. For details, it will have to wait until Marcelle gets back, as any would just be speculations, Marcelle being the only one who knows what really happened since.

What we know, since we were able to see it on a video, thanks to the Iditarod Insider, is that she had a little mishap on the trail at Dalzel Gorge, like many others did, between Rainy Pass and Rohn. Thankfully, we had brought a spare sled to Northern Air Cargo for drop off at McGrath, 2 checkpoints passed Rohn, where she managed to make it with a worn down sled, not to mention the lack of snow on that part of the trail and one dog out. Yes, our dear Cali ate her booties once again, whichprobably gave her stomach aches, so Marcelle had to send her back from Rohn to Anchorage to her handler Bruno Prados, whom I got this information from… ;)

Once the sled was changed in McGrath, Marcelle pushed on until the next checkpoint, Takotna, where she sent back 2 more dogs, Pluton and Doulik, both suffering from their left shoulders, at least according to the report of the vet on duty. Two checkpoints down the road, in Ophir, it was the cute Lola that had to be sent back in Bruno’s care with a sore left tricep. And at the next checkpoint, in Cripple, it was the poor Cochise’s turn to get sent to rest, exhausted. At least that’s the information I got from Bruno. Marcelle will forgive me if I mixed it all up, as, even though Bruno and I both speak the same language, it is not rare that Quebecers and the French misunderstand each other… ;)

According to the Iditarod website, Marcelle would have also dropped another dog in Elim, who is now waiting for her in Nome, but we weren’t able to find out which one. But there is a chance that it is a make since the only female left onboard was our dear Cheyenne Jr. Unless she had enough of all those macho males… ;)

That’s it for what we know for sure. For the rest of the story, we’ll have to wait for Marcelle to get back and tell us all about it in details… On this day, March 15, it is now 1 PM in Alaska, 2 PM in Yukon, 5 PM in Quebec and 10 PM in Europe, that is if my calculations are right…. ;) On the Iditarod website, Marcelle’s beacon indicates that she has stopped, not too far from Safety, the last checkpoint before Nome. Unless her beacon doesn’t work anymore? Let’s hope that all is well and she simply decided to stop to rest, taking advantage of one last moment alone with her dogs in the great outdoors of Alaska… After all, she’s been on the trail for over 12 hours, so it is a well-deserved rest. Patience, the story will soon unfold…

According to Mitch, my contact at the Nome Visitor’s Centre, Elliot Anderson, the musher that was behind the female trio which Marcelle was part of with other rookies Monica Zappa and Lisbet Norris before she stopped, has dropped out of the race. So if she doesn’t catch up to Monica and Lisbet, Marcelle could very well be the one to close the trail and therefore win the Red Lantern Award, granted to the last musher to come into Nome, as a symbol of her perseverance. Still according to Mitch, as well Eric Noreau, who is taking care of the rest of Alayuk’s pack, along with Marcelle’s husband Gilles, she should be in Nome around 2 or 3 PM, Alaskan time, maybe even later since the 6 inches of fresh snow seem to be slowing things down.

We’ll find out the rest from Marcelle herself… In the meantime, I’d like to leave you with this beautiful drawing my daughter Niivi, who was with me at the start when Marcelle undertook this epic journey, made for the one she admires greatly and who might inspire her to run the Iditarod herself when she’s all grown up… That is if there’s snow left in Alaska by then! ;)
